The Winter Wedding Of Kate & Fred

A cold winter day in December and I'm off to shoot the wedding of Kate & Fred at a large home in the beautiful suburb of Limhamn, Malmö. A quick stop off at the beauty salon so I can capture a few shots of Kate getting her hair done and a chance to meet her and discuss the day ahead. I've taken some lovely shots of the smiling bride to be and we head off together to the venue of the ceremony.A lovely pink house set against a backdrop of a partially cloudy sky, with the sun just about beaming through the hedges in the garden to the front of the house. I take the opportunity to get a few shots of Kate being greeted by the owner of the house and a few other friends. As we step inside, I'm excited by the decor within the home. It has a very retro feel with lots of greens and blues splashed against the walls and a creeky old spiralling staircase leading to the upper floor. This presents A chance for me to capture some shots of Kate on her own, waiting at the top of the stairs, clutching a bouquet of flowers and smiling. I'm introduced to Fred, beaming with excitement, but with an expected sense of nerves. The big moment is dawning on him but all I see is a proud man, looking forward to marry someone he clearly loves. I move around just before the ceremony to get some close ups of the best man and some guests as well as some of the table setting and features in the dining room.As the ceremony begins, I position myself at the back of the room to take a few overview shots, before quietly shuffling through the guests sitting in the room to get some close ups of everyone from a few different positions.Continuing the ceremony, I find the best position is just outside the entrance to the room. From here, the straight view to the bride and groom and other guests, gives me the best angle to capture the emotions and significant moments. As some prayers are read out, the best man tells a story about the couple. He mentions how difficult a year it had been with the news that Kate had become ill.I paused for a moment. It suddenly dawned on me that this wedding had so much more meaning to it than expected. The smiling faces and happiness in the room had all overwhelmed my judgement of the occasion and I was now feeling a deeper sense of responsibility to make sure I got some amazing shots, something that can be cherished as a constant reminder of the amazing day these people shared together on this cold but sunny winters day in December. I'm a professional and always continue to perform in whichever circumstances I find myself in, but I can't lie for a moment and say I didn't get close to a tear in my eye at this point. The world can be cruel to a lot of people, but you have to keep your head up and keep fighting to survive. Keep positive and the people around you will smile with you.The ceremony ended with a few soggy tissues around the room, but with smiles drying everyones hearts. I got everyone together at the front of the house for group shots and then found time with the bride and groom to get some portraits. As fate would have it, the sun broke through the clouds and was able to get some shots of the happy couple with a beautiful vanilla sky just behind them.Timing is everything in photography. You can't ask the sky to change to suit you, but when nature makes its own decision to help you out, all you can do is be thankful. I finished up and said goodbye to Kate, Fred and the fantastic guests that were there in attendance. A short trip back to my place (ok, I got a bus in the wrong direction and actually took me 30 minutes longer than it should've taken) and time to reflect on the day.How did it go? Well... great. So nice to be hired by such loving and friendly people that made you feel welcome and wanted. I've delivered the images to two extremely happy people and been left with a new sense of motivation for the year ahead. It's not easy working full time for a business you only set up recently, with not many contacts or knowing the language, but I let my photography do the talking and hopefully this year I will only continue to grow and get more work.Life's for living and making the most of the opportunity you have.
