Wedding at the Fairmont Banff

Brides and wedding photographers, take note. This is going to be a long entry. 2 years ago, I photographed a wedding at Fairmont Banff Springs. There's a few things that I learned, a few small things that made this wedding really stand out in my mind.First off, the feeling. Choose your bridal party carefully! This group brought on the party – there was never a dull moment, everyone was cracking jokes, no one complained about the cold. I've given pep talks before, but honestly this group brought such an unreal energy of excitement to the day – it was certainly a highlight. Most wedding photographers know exactly what I'm talking about – when there's so much joy in the day that you just can't stop beaming. This doesn't happen by accident. It's a distinct, purposeful decision that every person in these photos made. And it made a difference. Such a wonderful difference.Next, I scouted carefully. After 6 hours of scouting the day before, I had more than enough spots in mind. Reading google reviews is one thing, but I made it a point to talk to the hotel staff, the staff at the coffee shop, then a group of college kids at the coffee shop, and just about everyone else who would talk to me. Then I found a first look spot, just by talking to a janitor. He said, "We have a giant ballroom that hasn't been in use for years. Come check it out." And I did, and messaged the bride "We have a new spot. For the first look."And lastly, (although I could go on), all the connections. I had the mother of the bride phone me on the way home and ask if I could deliver the family photos (several group photos) early. I was happy to oblige. It is important to connect with the bride and room, but if the parents or siblings are comfortable enough to contact me directly, I know I've done my job.
This is absolutely evident in the reception photos. People don't put on airs. They know I'm her to capture every smile, every tear, every nose being blown, every awkward moment. It's not so much the pictures, it's the feelings we all felt that night. Even now, I look at them and remember how unique and special that day was. And that's the whole point, isn't it?
