Living in the Bubble

I am documenting the process of becoming a family during Covid-19 which is so difficult and complex. Quarantine feels like motherhood: mostly remaining home, breastfeeding, washing, changing diapers. It is an incredible and challenging time to love and protect my son Toni, emotions of happiness and loneliness at the same. My mother Helga lives in a nursing home, like about 800,000 people in Germany. Elderly people are society’s most vulnerable and particularly at risk of contracting Covid-19 and dying from it, so visits are only allowed under hygienic conditions. It is a balancing act not to isolate the residents completely and yet to protect them. Learning to live a new rhythm and becoming a family during Covid-19 feels like living in a bubble.
