St Mary’s Cathedral Kilkenny & Mount Juliet Estate Wedding

Keira and Bryan travelled from Washington, D.C. with around seventy of their closest friends and family for a St Patrick’s weekend wedding in Kilkenny, and it turned out to be one of those weekends that people will talk about for a long time.Their ceremony took place in St Mary’s Cathedral, Kilkenny, which is one of the most impressive churches in Ireland. It sits right in the middle of Kilkenny City and has that big Gothic interior that always feels dramatic but still very warm for a wedding ceremony. It is a lovely place to photograph a wedding because the light is soft and directional, and it has a real sense of occasion when people walk down the aisle there. After the ceremony, we kept things very simple. We did a quick set of family photographs outside the cathedral and then, instead of heading straight back to the reception, we made a stop in Kilkenny city at Tynan’s Bridge House Bar, which is one of the great pubs in Kilkenny. The couple wanted a bit of time to themselves and a chance to soak in the day, so we had a quiet half hour there while the guests made their way back towards Thomastown. One of my favourite moments of the day was Keira walking barefoot through the streets of Kilkenny with her wedding dress slightly lifted off the ground while we made our way to the pub. It was relaxed, unplanned, and very much in the spirit of the day. From Kilkenn,y we headed back to Mount Juliet Estate in Thomastown, where the reception took place in the newly refurbished Mount Juliet Manor House. This was actually the first wedding held there after the refurbishment, and the place looked incredible. Mount Juliet has always been one of the best wedding venues in Ireland, but the Manor House now feels even more special again. We did a very quick couple portrait session in front of the Manor House, no more than five minutes, just enough to get a few photographs with the building and the grounds. The rest of the time was spent with their guests, which is exactly how it should be.The speeches took place before dinner, and they were emotional in the best possible way. You could tell the room was full of people who had travelled a long way and who really cared about the couple. Those are always the weddings that have the best atmosphere.Dinner was at the Lady Helen Restaurant at Mount Juliet, one of the most famous Michelin-starred restaurants in Ireland. The food was the centrepiece of the day. Instead of a traditional seating plan, the couple did something different. Everyone had their starter with one group, then moved tables for the main course, and moved again for dessert. It meant they got to spend real time with lots of different guests rather than being stuck at one table all evening. I would not be surprised if more couples start doing this because it worked incredibly well. After dinner there was a dress change, then the band started and the dance floor filled straight away. The party continued late into the night in the 1757 Bar at Mount Juliet, which is a perfect spot for an after-party and one of the reasons Mount Juliet weddings are always good fun. Everything is in one place, and the night just keeps going. It was one of those weddings where the timeline was simple, nobody disappeared for hours for photographs, the couple spent most of the day with their guests, and everything just flowed naturally from one part of the day to the next.If you were planning a wedding in Kilkenny, Thomastown, or Mount Juliet Estate, this was a very good example of how to structure a day so that you actually get to enjoy it while still getting great photographs.A brilliant weekend, a brilliant group of people, and a wedding that will live long in the memory.
